Mikroplastik in der Reinigungsbranche: Unsichtbare Gefahr fuer Mensch und Umwelt

Microplastics in the Cleaning Industry: Invisible Threat to Humans and the Environment

What is microplastic?

Microplastics refer to plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters. In the professional cleaning industry, the issue is more complex than often portrayed - and concerns both the cleaning agents used and the cleaning systems themselves.

Reusable mops: Outdated method with underestimated risks

For a long time, reusable mops were considered a sustainable alternative. But from a hygienic and microbiological point of view, they are problematic:

  • Biofilm: Persistent biofilm forms in the fibers, which is not completely removed even by machine washing. Germs survive and are redistributed during the next use.
  • Cross-contamination: The same mop is used in different areas - dirt, bacteria and chemicals are carried from room to room.
  • Microfiber input: When washed in the machine, synthetic mop fibers release microplastics into the wastewater - which sewage treatment plants cannot completely filter out.

In short: reusable mops are neither hygienic nor as environmentally friendly as often claimed.

The main problem: Conventional cleaning agents

Even more serious is the microplastic input from liquid cleaners. Many conventional products contain:

  • Synthetic polymers as thickeners - not biodegradable
  • Petroleum-based surfactants that pollute waters
  • Solvents and biocides that persist in the environment
  • Microparticles as abrasive additives

These substances enter the environment in large quantities every day via wastewater - sewage treatment plants cannot completely retain them.

The environment is already at its limit

Over 8 million tons of plastic are in the world's oceans. Microplastics have been detected in the deep sea, in Arctic ice and on mountain peaks. It does not degrade, accumulates over centuries and has already been found in human blood, lungs and the placenta.

The better alternative: Modern disposable systems and sustainable cleaners

Professional disposable cleaning pads and systems offer clear advantages over reusable mops:

  • No biofilm - each use with fresh, uncontaminated material
  • No cross-contamination between areas
  • No microfiber input from washing
  • Highest hygiene even in sensitive areas

Combined with microplastic-free, biodegradable cleaners, a system is created that is both hygienic and environmentally conscious.

What to look for in a cleaner?

  • Microplastic-free formulation
  • Biodegradable surfactants
  • Concentrates instead of ready-to-use solutions
  • Certifications such as EU Ecolabel or Blue Angel

Conclusion

Reusable mops are neither the most hygienic nor the most ecological choice. Modern disposable systems in combination with sustainable cleaners set the new standard. At UNITEX, we develop cleaning products that meet the highest professional requirements while protecting people and the environment. Because clean does not have to come at the expense of nature.
